OâRrin
Hunting was a convenient excuse to stay out late, knowing that the later I returned, the more likely it was Hetta would have gone to my sleep sack on her own and would be asleep. When I returned to the small camp, a pair of small, fluffy rykon hanging from my belt, she was still awake, much to my surprise. She was sitting in front of the fire, her gaze locked on its flames, and my sleep sack was untended to.
âHetta?â I moved quickly towards her, my alarm making my movements jerky. âAre you okay? Why are you not asleep?â
She squeaked and nearly fell backwards, a trait I was starting to find endearing. She was easily startled, my Hetta. Then her cheeks turned that appealing pink color. âI was, um. Uh.â Her mind was clearly working hard, looking for an excuse. âCouldnât sleep.â
I frowned, settling far enough away that I could process my catches without getting any gore on her. âDo you need help? Thereâs an herbââ
She was shaking her head before I finished, her voice low. âI just wanted to, um, stay here for a bit.â
It was strange, the way she wouldnât look at me, the way she stared intently at the fire while I skinned and then stored the catches. The small, soft hides would make good shoes once prepared, or blankets for the smaller humans, but it would take many days. Had I done something to offend her? Disappoint her? Maybe she was disappointed in the catches, that they were not as big as the dohli NâAshtar had returned with. But that would have been far too much meat for our camp, so I had stuck with my snares. Should I have told her that?
I grunted as I rolled the furs up to be processed, then cooked some of the meat. I preferred mine raw, but others didnât, and what I didnât eat we could smoke. The cold would keep them safe for at least another half a day. By the time some was done cooking, I passed it over to Hetta, only glancing at her while waiting for her to take it. After a second of staring at me, she did, although her eyes were downcast.
Dismay tinged my eyes pink for a moment, my scales darkening. A good male made sure his female lacked for nothing, that she had everything she needed. From the sadness on her face, in her posture, I had failed.
Not that I had publicly claimed her as my female, because I was not certain she wanted me to. Although I had started thinking of her as such. Instead, Iâd just assumed that she was enjoying her time with her fellow humans, especially since the one called Erica woke up and seemed to cause much enthusiasm among their small clan. In order to allow Hetta time to spend with her tribe, I had gone with NâAshtar, hunting and then talking about entering Kohta with the humans in tow.
We still did not know what to do with them.
